From now on, the focus will be shifted onto a final major assignment for my stream of MPH (OH stream). I presented today to the course coordinator to get approval and suggestions from my fellows, a proposal entitled “Design and Implementation of an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) System in Indonesian Civil Aviation”. The reason why I chose this topic, not only is simply because I am interested in Civil Aviation Medicine, Health and Safety, but is also due to aviation safety concern that has risen in the past three years.

The topic is outlined into three major parts. First of all, the general situation in Indonesia will be covered, including current aviation and safety regulations, OHS system has been applied so far, and much more about the accident statistics (major crashes, skiding off a runaway, etc) as well as problems as to why European Union banned all carriers from Indonesia. Moreover, this part will highlight major determinants of all those major problems, looking at from individual error, human factors and organisational factors. An addition from Dr David Fish is to include the environmental factors.

In the next section, good practices of OHS system in civil aviation will be explored, by examining major elements mentioned in the literature, relevant books and critical review of journal articles. Lots of attention will be paid to what have been done internationally, especially good practices in Australia, USA, the UK and some other developed countries.

Based on those stuff, the last passage will draw the ideal design which is applicable to the local situation. The first simple steps to do will be suggested and might cover the short, medium and long term strategies. It’s a three-month work that leads to the accomplishment of my study.
